Is Yin Yoga For Me Or Not?

Le yin yoga - CLEAN LIVING - WE ARE CLEAN

This new form of yoga is becoming THE yoga to try absolutely. We tell you everything about yin yoga, the new discipline for Zen aficionados.

Hyper meditative and static, yin yoga is not slow but gentle. It adapts to you, your body, your constraints and your limits. Talking about yin yoga is a bit like explaining to an acrobatic rock fan the virtues for the body and mind of a languorous slow dance. Moreover, it was following an injury that Paul Grilley, an American keen on ashtanga yoga, invented this discipline in the 90s. The principle? A clever combination of Indian yoga postures, sprinkled with principles of traditional Chinese medicine and Taoist thought. As a result, yin yoga is an invitation to slow down, to press "pause", to reconnect with your bodily sensations - what I feel right now -, to find your inner calm and new energy! A whole program taken from Clean Living !

The difference with other yogas?

Accessible to all, this yoga is based on the principle of "holding" the posture. No question of chaining them together at a wild pace. No, no. Here, we choose a posture and we hold it. Easy? Not really. Because the goal of the game is to push our own limits without ever being in pain. We thus learn to accept discomfort (both physical and mental and emotional) in total stillness. This is level 2 of lotus meditation. Of course, as with other yogas , breathing is a powerful ally. Generally, participants are asked to practice with their eyes closed, in order to connect well with their breathing and their inner being. How long to hold? Minimum three minutes. Ideally seven minutes (that's already a lot) for each position.

Good for body and mind

Yin yoga is an excellent activity to get back intosport gently. This discipline combines the stillness of postures and the voluntary relaxation of muscles, which is great for joints! Another advantage? Yin yoga strengthens many small, deep tissues that are essential for unlocking the body and restoring its flexibility: fascia (tissues that surround the muscles), ligaments (tissues that connect cartilage and bones) and tendons (tissues where muscles attach to bones). Some positions are very well-known (child's pose, Shavasana, lotus, etc.), others a little less so, such as the tiger pose on the tree (sitting on your heels, upper body folded on a bolster) or the happy baby (lying on your back, knees on your chest, grab each foot with the hand on the same side).

Is it possible to practice it at home?

By taking a group class, you can learn the different postures to follow (especially if you have never done yoga). But, it is quite possible to do yin yoga at home. There are quite a few classes on YouTube (for example on the channels YogaCoaching, Sandra InSoha, Holis Life) or simply type "yin yoga" in the search bar. Isabelle Delaleu, certified yin yoga teacher and author of "Mon cahier Yin Yoga" (Éditions Solar), gives in her book many tips for being autonomous in your practice. Take a timer, prepare your session on a sheet by noting the different figures but also remember to bring a small blanket (against colds). How to hold for several minutes? Meditation enthusiasts know this. For others, we can advise you to sing mantras, to concentrate on your breath (which goes in and out) or to escape to a beach in Zanzibar... So, ready?
